Tell us about yourself and what you do.

I have been a wildland firefighter for the past eleven years. I am based out of Western Colorado, but have been engaged in fire management operations all across the United States and even Canada. I spend most of my time outside of work hunting, camping and exploring the American west.

Our story is at the core of all we do. How/when did your passion for the outdoors and nature spark?

My Passion was sparked at a young age. My parents would load me up in the pop -up camper and take me camping to explore North America. This allowed me to learn the finer points of woodsmanship as I grew up.

Tell us about a time when you gained perspective on life through the outdoors?

Last year I went on a solo backpack elk hunt in Colorado. I’d been hunting elk for 16 years, but nothing could have prepared me for the mental and physical challenge that the solo hunt provided.

Do you have any family stories relating to your passions?

I count myself lucky that my parents instilled a passion for the outdoors in me at such a young age. Throughout my life that interest has remained alive and well.

If you could travel anywhere in the world at this very moment, where would you go?

Chilean Patagonia.

How did you learn about Stormy Kromer?

My uncle has been wearing them for as long as I can remember. I never felt like I had the style or character to pull them off, but as I got older I felt that the functionality of the cap suited my needs outdoors. The look is just a bonus.

What was your first Stormy Kromer product?

It was the original cap, wool blend in blaze orange. I received it as a Christmas gift from my Father, it’s still my favorite Stormy piece that I own!

What makes Stormy Kromer ideal for your lifestyle?

The functionality of a properly fitted short brim cap far exceeds typical modern ball caps, additionally the ear flaps provide just enough coverage to keep my ears warm while still allowing me to hear while hunting. Stormy Kromer products don’t just function well, they represent a lifestyle!

  1. My longtime friend Joe & I are avid mushroom foragers and outdoorsey kinda guys here in Marquette – fishing, building, getting chewed up my mosquitos – we’ve been focused on Mushrooms over the past decade or so and love our Stormy Kromer hats in the deep woods, especially wool in spring and fall. I think Joe has 3 or 4! I can’t wait to wear my canvass hat this spring picking fiddleheads and leeks!

We now are incubating a Myco-remediation company at the InventNMU Smartzone that is focused on cleaning up polluted soils, starting with the PFAS problem in soil – the water repellent, AFFF firefighting foam, teflon coating, etc that has become ubiquitous and threatens planetary health.
Because of our love of the natural world, we have been learning and listening to this wisdom found in the forest and bring this secret knowledge to help clean up our world of pollutants like PFAS and micro plastics.

Companies like Stormy Kromer who have been doing the right thing for years deserve the recognition for their fortune and commitment to quality here in the US. We need more companies doing the right thing, regardless of the marketing opportunity.

We love to support Yooper companies and especially ones that have been doing awesome things for years! Cheers!
